According to the NBA, 50 percent of Canada’s population has watched the 2019 NBA Finals between the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors.

This report comes at the heels of an epic Game 5 that saw the Warriors edge out the Raptors 106-105. It was a dramatic event which saw Kevin Durant get injured and Toronto almost win the coveted Larry O’Brien Trophy before a Golden State comeback.

Interestingly, Game 5 became the most-watched TV program in Canada this 2019, beating the Super Bowl.

Canada has a population of roughly 37 million people. If 50 percent of Canadians have been following the 2019 NBA Finals, that translates to at least 18.5 million individuals.

Canada is a Hockey Country. NHL teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks make the headlines on Canadian sports news.

Let’s also not forget about the Canadian Football League (CFL). Nine teams compete annually for the coveted Grey Cup.

However, things have changed in 2019. Canadians have become more passionate about basketball, particularly the NBA. It shouldn’t come as a surprise though, especially since the Raptors are Canada’s only NBA team.

Should Toronto win its first league title in its 24-year franchise history, expect basketball television ratings to soar higher.
